There's nothing that can be more nerve-wracking than getting your pet ready for surgery. From making sure that your pet is in good health to preparing him for the procedure itself, there's a lot that goes into it. But don't worry, we're here to help. At Lancaster Animal Clinic, we've been helping pet owners prepare their furry friends for surgery for years. We know all the ins and outs of what needs to be done to make sure that your pet is ready, both physically and mentally.
Pets who have pre-existing conditions can have a more difficult time with their surgery because their bodies may not be able to handle the anesthesia as well. If your pet has any underlying health conditions, be sure to talk to one of our veterinarians about them before scheduling the surgery.
For instance, we might recommend that your pet goes on a weight-loss regimen to make the surgery easier on his body. If your pet has diabetes, we will work with you to make sure that his blood sugar levels are well-controlled before the big day.
On the day before surgery, this is the time to make sure your pet avoids eating and drinking. Not doing so can make surgery dangerous because it can cause your pet to vomit while he is under anesthesia. That being said, you don't have to starve your pet. We recommend that you stop feeding him by 8 pm the night before and then withhold water starting at 10 pm.
One of the best things you can do for your pet is to help him stay relaxed before surgery. You can do this by making sure he gets a good night's sleep and stick to his normal routine.
